LIFE + ME’S MINI INTERVIEW WITH REBECCA FORD, FOUNDER OF ELLBIE CO…
Founded by Rebecca Ford, Ellbie Co. offers craft kits and workshops for the new generation of crafter. With a strong focus upon mindfulness, Becci sees crafting as an escape from the day-to-day and as a chance to spend time doing something relaxing and satisfying. Ellbie Co.’s purpose is for everybody to be able to switch off, take some time out of the busy day, get creative and ‘make happy’.
We caught up with Becci to find out how she nourishes and fuels her own mind:
WHAT’S YOUR MISSION?
My mission is to make people happy through making! I want to be able to provide people with creative mindful crafting projects that they can escape into even if only for a few moments. I find that when you make something you focus so much on the project at hand that your worries and anxieties can melt away and for me that is what makes crafting so magical and I want to share those magical crafting moments with the world so that everybody no matter their experience level can make happy.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Everything inspires me. Anything colourful or cute. I love Japanese kawaii culture – our cute fluffy guinea pigs – my partner who supports me – stories of people on the news helping each other and showing love to one another. I like to collect lots of different experiences (I call them dots!) and it is these dots that inspire me to try different things and come up with different designs and ideas. Basically anything that makes me believe in humanity or makes me smile inspires me!
HOW DO YOU LOOK AFTER YOUR OWN MENTAL WELLBEING?
I am not the best at this and it is something that I need to get better at. As I am known for working very late at night and then getting up early the next day – I find it very hard to not be doing something all the time. So for me to mentally be able to recharge I find hula hooping or running to be one of my favourite forms of self-care.
Those activities take me outside into the fresh air and away from my workspace, and force me to focus on just simply living in the moment and the activity at hand. I try to either run or hula hoop every single day.
WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER ONE MENTAL WELLBEING TIP?
TALK – talk, talk, talk… it is always so much worse in your own mind than you think it is. Anxiety feeds on you not saying anything. So if you ever feel anxious the best thing you can do is to talk to somebody about it. It can be scary and intimidating sometimes just to admit how you might be feeling to another human being but it releases the pressure, and whilst it might not instantly resolve how you feel, it will help a lot just knowing that you aren’t then dealing with any intrusive thoughts alone.
If you have nobody to talk to then writing out any worries on a piece of paper so that you can see them in front of you and break them down into chunks can also work too. But talking would be my number one tip, (plus a good cup of tea and some yummy cake)!
WHAT’S IN YOUR SELF-CARE TOOLKIT?
I write lists, lots and lots of lists, to break down my tasks for the week which helps to clear my mind when it feels a bit cluttered or I go for a run to try and dust any mental cobwebs away!
If I’m having a day where I feel like I haven’t been productive enough and I feel a bit down then I like to try my hand at baking – I find it to be quite relaxing. I also enjoy cross stitching (obviously!) in front of a bit of netflix cuddled up with my partner.
WHAT’S YOUR PERSONAL MANTRA?
My personal mantra is “if it’s difficult it is worth doing” – it’s a mantra that gets me through the tough days and allows me to believe that there is always a reason to everything. Even those days where things might go a bit wrong! I’m not sure where I heard it first – but it has resonated with me since I was about 13 years old and I like to live my life trying to challenge myself to do things that I might initially find difficult to expand my comfort zone!
